Getting the best possible audio out of your tracks starts long before the mastering stage. A strong mix is everything, if your mix isn’t right, no master can truly fix it. Mastering can enhance a track, but it can’t repair fundamental issues like poor balance, clashing elements, or a messy low-end.
Before you even think about sending your track for mixing or mastering, make sure you’ve tested it properly. Listen to your track on different systems, your studio speakers, headphones, earbuds, even your phone speaker. A good track should translate well everywhere. If something sounds off on one system, it usually means there’s something in your mix that needs attention.
It’s also important to already push your mix as far as you can yourself. Use solid plugins, focus on clean levels, and try to get your track as balanced and clear as possible. The better your mix is before (mix&) mastering, the better the final result will be.
At the same time, understand that even the biggest artists in the industry don’t do everything themselves. Many top DJs and producers work with professional engineers for mixing and mastering, simply because it takes years of experience to reach that level of precision. A trained ear can catch details you might miss and make sure your track translates perfectly on every system.
Having that second perspective can make a huge difference. If you’re serious about your sound, investing in proper mixing and mastering isn’t a luxury, it’s a key step in getting your music release-ready.
